  • Man dead after house fire, woman in hospital
  • Blaze just days ago claimed chef's entire family
  • Warning to families to check smoke alarms

A MAN is believed to have died and a woman is suffering serious injuries after a fire in a unit on Brisbane's south side.

dThe fire broke out in the unit on Persse Road, Runcorn about 9.50pm (AEST) today, police said.

The 43-year-old woman is in Royal Brisbane Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, say police.

A man remains unaccounted for. Emergency services have been unable to enter the unit - one of 34 in the complex - because it is structurally unsound.

Police were guarding the flat this morning but scientific officers had yet to arrive to examine the scene.

The fatal fire follows the house fire on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Boxing Day which claimed four lives.

Celebrity chef Matt Golinksi is fighting for his life in hospital at Tewantin after his home was engulfed in fire early on Monday morning.

Police have said there was nothing suspicious about the blaze, which claimed the lives of Mr Golinski's wife Rachel and daughters Starlia, Sage and Willow.

The fires are a warning to other families to ensure their smoke alarms are working.
