THE national road toll has more than doubled, from five on Christmas Eve to 11 on Christmas Day.
Four people have died on NSW roads.
Two were killed when a car veered off the road and crashed into a steel guard rail in Tweed Heads, on the far north coast, early on Sunday morning.
The 49-year-old male driver suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.
His 50-year-old female passenger died later in Tweed Heads Hospital.
A few hours later, a man in his 20s died when his car smashed into a tree near Tamworth in the state's north.
On Christmas Eve, an 83-year-old man died after his vehicle and a utility collided on the Kings Highway in Warri in the state's south.
In South Australia, a 29-year-old driver was killed on Christmas Day just four kilometres from his home, taking the state's holiday road toll to two.
In Western Australia, a 27-year-old Taiwanese man was killed after losing control of his car at Brookton.
The Northern Territory recorded its first road death of the Christmas season when a 37-year-old man was struck by a road train near Elliot, about half-way between Darwin and Alice Springs, early on Christmas Day.
The road toll remains at one in Victoria and two in Queensland.
There have been no accidents in Tasmania and the ACT.
