Police are investigating a suspicious death of an elderly woman in Armadale.

  • Stroke victim dies in suspicious circumstances
  • Husband arrested in relation to the death
  • Reports it may have been a mercy killing

AN 81-year-old man has been charged over the death of his elderly wife in Perth yesterday.

Police were called to the Angelo Street house just after 2pm yesterday, where the woman's body was found  as well as the man, who was injured.

It’s understood the pair were married for 50 years and had at least two children together.

The man, who is being treated for his injuries at Royal Perth Hospital, was charged overnight with aggravated grievous bodily harm.

The charge will be reviewed after a post mortem examination is conducted.

The accused is currently in hospital with non-life threatening injuries and it is expected a bedside court hearing will be arranged.

It has been reported the woman's death may have been a mercy killing, as she suffered a stroke many years ago, had arthritis and rarely left home.

The elderly man was her primary carer and often walked her in the street with a white fluffy dog, the West Australian reported.

Right-to-die campaigner Philip Nitschke told the West Australian if this was a mercy killing or attempted suicide pact it was tragic and an example of what could occur without proper euthanasia laws.

Dr Nitschke believes people with long-term illnesses and considerable suffering should be able to lawfully have help to end their life.

"People who do take that often-compassionate and loving action to help someone they care about to take that course can be looking at very serious legal penalties," Dr Nitschke said to the newspaper.

He believes people could attempt to take their own lives due to the tough penalties they could face.
